What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial ones without “implanting” them into your jaw like a typical bridge would. An alternative is a bridge, which, as the name suggests, joins a prosthetic tooth to your real teeth on either side of the gap.

They may be a viable alternative if you would rather not get a dental implant or if your gums or jaw are not healthy enough to support one.

There are three different types of dental bridges: traditional, cantilever, and the Maryland bridge. Bridges are often built from metal, porcelain, zirconia (a extremely hard material), or a combination of any of the three.

The most typical bridge involves placing crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap and securing a “pontic” (fake tooth) in the space between them.

Cantilever bridges are less frequent. When there is only one tooth adjacent to the gap, the pontic is affixed to that tooth and the crown is put over it. For rear teeth that must withstand a lot of pressure, it is less durable than being attached on both sides and is therefore not a desirable option.

The Maryland bridge style is the last one, named after the University of Maryland where it was created. This uses a similar idea to the conventional method, connecting a false tooth to the teeth on either side of the gap, but uses “wings” that fasten to the back of each tooth next to the gap rather than crowns. Again, this is not the best option for back teeth and is really just a possibility for people who have good oral health.

A dental bridge, regardless of its design, gives patients the entire functioning of a full set of teeth and boosts their confidence in their smile.

Advantages of a tooth bridge

Several factors make a dental bridge an excellent choice for tooth replacement:

  • Avoids an invasive implant
Some people opt not to have dental implants placed because they require being anchored into the bone beneath the gum line. Additionally, persons with poor gum or jaw health should not get implants.
  • A full smile and confidence
Lack of confidence can be exacerbated by missing teeth, and some people would rather grin while keeping their lips shut. A bridge replaces this space with a tooth that looks natural.
  • Normal functionality
You can eat, drink, and communicate properly with the help of a dental bridge because it provides full functionality.
  • Better oral health
A bridge can help your oral health because a lost tooth can hasten the decay of your other teeth and create movement in the teeth that are still present.
