WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety is a typical reaction to stressful circumstances. When it makes it possible for us to be watchful and make sure we reach our objectives—like finishing a speech or administering endodontic treatment—it is adaptive and helpful. When it is excessive and improperly directed, it can be incapacitating. When there is functional impairment, it is a disorder. Despite the fact that there are various types of anxiety disorders, dentists are not qualified to make particular diagnosis. The fact that many anxiety disorders share characteristics and typically respond effectively to pharmaceutical and behavioural therapy is nevertheless important to note. We’ll talk about these management strategies in the context of a dental practise.

CAUSES OF DENTAL ANXIETY

Dental anxiety is strongly predicted by a bad dental encounter. People who had a traumatic, upsetting, or frightening dental encounter were almost 22 times more likely to have dental anxiety, according to a random sample of the general population. Dental anxiety is strongly connected with extreme powerlessness, a loss of control, and a lack of understanding from the dentist. One of the most common and upsetting life experiences is experiencing excruciating pain following dental work. This can lead to psychological damage and a lifelong phobia of the dentist. 8 Dental phobia has been discovered to be inherited, much like anxiety disorders.
