Fissure Sealant
Preventing plaque and decay in the back of molars.
Cavities are one of the leading causes of dental problems; over 90% of Australians experience a cavity at some point in their lifetime. Additionally, a fissure sealant treatment is a quick and easy solution to avoid cavities.
The natural grooves on all of the biting surfaces of teeth are called fissures. Food and germs can get lodged in your teeth’s fissures, especially in the back molars, and it can be challenging to thoroughly clean these fissures, which can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Fissure sealants are advised by dentists for this reason.
What is a fissure sealant?
Your teeth’s fissures and grooves will be filled with fissure sealants, which will help shield them from plaque and deterioration. They actually fill these crevices and pits with a transparent plastic substance to lessen the possibility of bacteria growing there instead.
Applying sealants is quick, painless, and simple. A specific dental light is used to set a white or clear plastic material that flows into the crevices. Once they are in place, neither talking nor smiling will reveal them.
It is advisable to apply these sealants within 18 months of tooth emergence for the most predictable effects, before germs have a chance to settle in and rot the new tooth. Fissure sealants are therefore typically applied to children as their adult teeth erupt, although adults can also gain from this procedure.
Before wearing out, sealants can last for several years. The result will be a healthier, brighter smile that you can be proud of, as well as good oral health with few cavities.
Your sealants will be checked frequently by your National Dental Care dentist to ensure they are still in good shape.
