In Australia, gum disease is exceedingly prevalent, with up to three out of every ten persons suffering from moderate to severe gum disease.

You should take precautions to avoid this problem as much as you can and treat it as soon as it manifests in order to prevent more issues. This issue can be painful and potentially harmful for your oral and general health if left untreated. So that you may move on with your life, this will help maintain your smile bright and healthy.

Your dentist or hygienist could advise having gum surgery if you have advanced periodontal disease or gum disease.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease, or periodontitis, occurs when the gums and surrounding tissues become diseased. Periodontitis and gingivitis are the two types.

Both more frequent and milder than gingivitis. Your gums will turn red and swollen during this time, and you might even notice some minor bleeding while cleaning your teeth. The good news is that gingivitis may be reversed and a healthy smile can be restored with regular oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing.

Periodontitis, the second variety, is essentially an advanced form of gingivitis. When gingivitis is not treated, periodontitis develops and can get very bad. In this instance, the gingivitis-related redness and infection grow to the point where bone is also compromised. Once enough bone has been lost, the teeth may eventually become loose and painful, and they may even need to be pulled out.

It is crucial to prevent gingivitis from progressing to the point of periodontitis because this condition can only be controlled and not completely treated.

What causes gum disease?

Both forms of gum disease often stem from poor oral hygiene as plaque builds up on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky substance formed by bacteria that glues itself to your teeth and only comes off with good brushing and flossing, so if you’re not cleaning your teeth well enough or regularly enough, the plaque can start to irritate your gums, and will harden into a substance known as tartar that cannot be removed by brushing alone – only a dental professional can remove it. Tartar is even worse for your gums than plaque, and will continue to irritate them and make gum disease worse.

That said, there are numerous causes that can lead to gingivitis and periodontitis.

These include:

  • Poor or irregular brushing and flossing
  • Bad dietary habits such as excessive sugar intake
  • Smoking and drug use
  • Some medications
  • Diabetes and some other conditions
  • A genetic predisposition
  • Puberty
  • Pregnancy

Your dentist can help you to determine the cause of your gum disease, which may help you to avoid or manage issues.
